CBP Detects Cesium‑137 in Imported Frozen Shrimp at Multiple U.S. Ports; FDA Issues Import Alert

CBP officers detected elevated levels of the radioisotope cesium‑137 in international food containers at several major U.S. ports (Los Angeles, Long Beach, Houston, Savannah, Norfolk, Elizabeth, Miami). CBP Labs confirmed the isotope and coordinated with FDA, which issued a food safety alert and placed Indonesian processor PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati on Import Alert 99‑51; detected levels are not an acute hazard but may pose long‑term cancer risks with repeated exposure. Containers were detained and investigations continue.
