DOJ, ICE Ramp Up Prosecutions After Violent Anti‑ICE Riots; 53 Charged, 1,618 Arrested in LA

Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said violent anti-ICE riots in California have not deterred immigration enforcement and have instead hardened prosecutors’ resolve to pursue those who attack or obstruct federal agents. His Central California office has charged dozens in connection with assaults on law enforcement, including an indictment of Jacob Daniel Terrazas for injuring a Border Patrol officer. Essayli highlighted incidents involving Molotov cocktails and other violent tactics and noted ICE made over 1,600 arrests in Los Angeles in June. He said some charges are adjusted as investigations continue but vowed prosecutors will continue to pursue and, when warranted, charge rioters who target immigration officials. Essayli characterized public sentiment that obstructing agents is acceptable as troubling and stressed that enforcement operations will continue.
