ICE Arrests Rising In Maine: Local Group Funds Commissary And Phone Calls For 60+ Detainees

Mainers for Humane Immigration is sending commissary funds to about 18 people held in ICE detention at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland and says it has supported more than 60 people since April. Volunteers cite reports of overcrowding, freezing cells, and inadequate food. The group also helps pay for phone calls and travel for those released from distant detention centers. The effort comes amid a documented rise in ICE arrests in Maine.
