ICE GAINS NEARLY 10,000 BEDS AS STATES OPEN 'ALLIGATOR ALCATRAZ,' 'DEPORTATION DEPOT' IN COORDINATED DETENTION PUSH

The Trump administration and DHS have partnered with states to open first-of-their-kind state-run and makeshift detention sites — including Alligator Alcatraz, Deportation Depot, Speedway Slammer, Cornhusker Clink and Louisiana Lockup — to expand ICE bed capacity. Combined, the state sites add nearly 10,000 beds beyond existing ICE facilities, and recent legislation and DHS statements provide funding for tens of thousands more. The administration plans to hire thousands of new ICE officers and divert legal personnel to speed up arrests and deportation proceedings, increasing demand for detention space. Supporters say the extra capacity prevents “catch and release” and enables more removals, while critics and civil-rights groups warn of due-process concerns, reduced access to counsel, and logistical and legal challenges.
