ICE Jails Missouri Green-Card Holder Grandma Over Decade-Old Bad Checks As Deportation Case Drags On
Donna Hughes Brown, an Irish citizen and lawful permanent resident, has been detained by ICE in a Kentucky facility and will spend Thanksgiving in custody while federal officials pursue deportation over misdemeanor bad check charges from more than a decade ago. Brown, who came to the U.S. as a child and holds a green card, and her family say she already paid restitution and should not face removal for old misdemeanors. ICE argues the past offenses amount to crimes of moral turpitude, but her husband and supporters contend she poses no public safety threat and that the proceedings have been repeatedly delayed. Her case has been continued multiple times, with the next court date scheduled for December 18, and Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth has said she will assist in efforts to secure Brown's release.
