ICE: TWICE-DEPORTED DRIVER CHARGED IN DEADLY DURHAM HIT-AND-RUN; $5M BOND

WRAL reports that Wilmer Fuentes Mejia, 30, charged in a deadly Sept. 13 hit-and-run in Durham, is in the U.S. illegally, per ICE, and was previously deported twice, according to a prosecutor. Mejia faces charges including hit-and-run and involuntary manslaughter; a judge set bond at $5,000,000. Court records show a 2020 Wake County DWI case in which Mejia failed to appear; an arrest order was served only after the Durham incident. The victim, Richard Ferguson Jr., 61, a longtime Durham Housing Authority worker, was remembered by family, who expressed relief at the high bond.
