Deportation Order Cited As Flight Risk: Ireland Judge Denies Bail In Athlone Assault Case
An Athlone District Court judge denied bail to a man accused of violently assaulting his wife after the State opposed bail, citing his deportation order, lack of legal status, and risk of flight and witness interference. Gardaí detailed injuries including a broken finger, bruising, and concussion, and said the man is appealing a January deportation order following a failed international protection claim. The defence denies the allegations and offered an alternative address, but the judge found the victim’s evidence compelling and noted the accused is also on High Court bail in a separate matter. The man was remanded to appear at Mullingar District Court.
