34 Oregon Sheriffs Back Marion County In ICE Subpoena Fight, Seek Court Clarity On Sanctuary Law

Thirty-four of Oregon’s 36 sheriffs signed a letter supporting Marion County’s federal lawsuit seeking a ruling on whether local agencies can share parolee information with ICE despite Oregon’s sanctuary law. The suit follows five Aug. 1 ICE administrative subpoenas for detailed records on five individuals, four with serious convictions, and names Gov. Tina Kotek, DHS Sec. Kristi Noem, and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons. The move comes amid U.S. AG Pam Bondi’s August demand letters threatening penalties for sanctuary jurisdictions, while Oregon AG Dan Rayfield vows to defend the state law. The sheriffs cite legal uncertainty and request clarity to balance public safety with compliance.
