Asheville Leaders Push To Block ICE Use Of City Property; Legal Aid Urges Know-Your-Rights
Amid increased ICE activity in North Carolina and community concern in western North Carolina, local leaders and legal advocates urged residents to know and exercise their constitutional rights when encountering federal immigration agents. Pisgah Legal Services reminded immigrants they have the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney, and the right to ask officers to show a warrant before permitting entry. Faith Communities for Immigration Justice organized outreach and encouraged documenting ICE activity, advising people to share verified videos with the Center for Immigrant Advancement hotline. Local leaders announced a proposed resolution to prohibit use of city-owned facilities for civil immigration enforcement to protect residents' rights and prioritize recovery resources.
