Federal Judge Issues TRO: ICE Can't Use Tear Gas Or Pepper Balls On Reporters At Broadview Amid 'Midway Blitz'

U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis granted a 14-day temporary restraining order barring ICE and other federal agents from using tear gas, pepper balls or other less-lethal munitions against non-threatening reporters, protesters and clergy at the Broadview immigration processing site and across the Northern District of Illinois. The TRO follows multiple incidents tied to DHS’s “Midway Blitz” operations in which journalists reported being hit with pepper balls or exposed to tear gas. The administration argued the order could tie officers’ hands during imminent danger, and a follow-up hearing is set for Oct. 23.
